Focused on ANIME&MANGA
with All Japanese Culture
KORYU is a Japanese mural artist currently based in Aotearoa New Zealand. Born in Maebashi, Japan in 1988, he originally trained and worked as a graphic designer before pursuing his passion for street art full-time. Since becoming a freelance artist, KORYU has travelled internationally to immerse himself in street culture and refine his craft, including studying urban art scenes in cities like Melbourne.
KORYU’s work ranges from large-scale public murals to canvas pieces, each filled with colour, dynamic forms, and unique creative energy. Over the past several years, he has been deeply involved in projects across New Zealand — from commissioned community murals to festival artworks — as well as in Japan and Australia. His pieces often reflect the local character of the places he paints, blending elements of nature, people, and cultural motifs in bold and engaging ways.
His achievements include winning the People’s Choice Award at the South Sea Spray festival in Bluff and at the Flare Street Art Festival, honours that speak to his strong connection with local communities and audiences. He has also been featured on radio and television, and in 2023 completed an official mural project in collaboration with a major gaming company in Japan.
Outside of his mural work, KORYU enjoys exploring new cultures through travel and living life as a creative practitioner. His artistic journey — from professional design to internationally respected muralist — continues to inspire people across Aotearoa and overseas.
